Title
"89th Division passing through the Court of Honor."
Description
Horizontal, sepia photograph shows returning 89th Division soldiers marching on street through the Court of Honor. The crowds line the street and fill the viewing stands along the street. Handwritten note in margin of the photo reads "May 30, 1919." Handwritten note by the photographer accompanying this and three other photos on the page reads "The 89th Div. passing through the Court of Honor." St. Louis officials planned welcome parades for returning local soldiers who were being transported by train to or through St. Louis, including the 89th Infantry Division of the United States Army, composed primarily of men from Missouri and other midwestern states. These Parades took different routes but all went through the "Court of Honor" on 12th Street, a section of which was marked by ornate white pillars and public viewing stands. Organizers typically had family members and friends gather at City Hall Park to meet the returning soldiers. Citation: St. Louis Republic, May 1919
